What is dyspraxia?
Dyspraxia is a disorder that affects fine and gross motor co-ordination and organisation of movement. Individuals may have difficulties with self-care, riding a bike, tying shoelaces, writing, typing, playing, planning and organisation. Individuals will often have additional difficulties with processing, memory and perception and processing. Dyspraxia frequently coexists with other disorders such as dyslexia, Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD), language disorders, and social, emotional and behavioural impairments.
What is verbal dyspraxia?
Verbal dyspraxia is a speech disorder. Individuals with with this disorder have difficulty in planning and co-ordinating the movement of muscles needed to produce clear speech.
What strategies do Forging Roots Education use to help tutor dyspraxic students?
Students with verbal dyspraxia, because of their inability to produce clear speech, often have reading, spelling and writing difficulties. These students require teaching of sound-letter relationships, phonological awareness activities (e.g. segmenting, blending, rhyming etc) and systematic and explicit phonics teaching alongside other reading and writing activities.
At Forging Roots Education, our calm, distraction-free office provides the perfect environment for your child to discriminate between sounds, attend to instructions and focus on learning. We establish routines so that students know what to expect in every session and use short, clear and concise instructions given one at a time. Skills are broken down in to small steps and taught in a sequential manner. We limit the amount of writing students have to do and explore other options for recording their work such as using a computer, a recording device for ideas constructed orally, and predictive text software for longer writing pieces. We teach in small bursts and give frequent movement breaks to aid concentration and help refocus. We can work on fine manipulation, gross motor and handwriting exercises.
