Description
The Gentle Maths Help Number Sense Program: Level 1
Level 1 is a dyscalculia-informed set of printables that helps children build a stable, physical feel for quantity to 20. No memorised facts, no timed tests — just seeing, touching, and comparing numbers until they truly make sense.
This is the starting point for the whole program. If your child can count to 10 but numbers still feel shaky, abstract, or anxiety-inducing, Level 1 is exactly where to begin.
💚 WHO THIS IS FOR
Parents supporting a child with dyscalculia or early maths anxiety.
Homeschoolers building number sense from the ground up.
Tutors and intervention teachers who need a slow, concrete starting point.
Any child who can count to 10 by rote but doesn’t yet really understand what numbers mean.
📦 WHAT’S INCLUDED (9 activities, 36 pages total)
Each activity includes 3 printable practice sheets, plus its own built-in parent guide page with tips and the reasoning behind the design.
Subitising Dot Pattern Cards — see a quantity and just know it, no counting required, with a self-checking answer key.
Subitising Match-Up Mat — match irregular dot patterns to the numeral without counting individual dots.
Count and Stamp Sheet — count real object rows and write the total, building counting fluency to 20.
One-to-One Matching Mat — draw a line between each item and its exact partner, the concrete root of counting.
More and Less Sorting Mat — compare two groups and circle which has more or less, the first step before addition.
Circle the Bigger Group — spot the bigger group by sight, an independent activity that builds visual number sense.
Number Line Fill-In — fill in missing numbers on a number line, numbers as positions, not just a spoken list.
Before and After — write the number that comes just before and after, number order made automatic.
Zero Means None — learn that zero is a real quantity, not an absence of meaning.
🧠 WHY IT WORKS
Every activity keeps quantity concrete and visible before it goes symbolic. Dot patterns are irregular on purpose (not neat dice faces) so that children build genuine number sense instead of memorising shapes. Groups are sometimes unequal on purpose, so comparing means real counting, not automatic line-drawing. Nothing here rushes a child from objects to digits — the physical stage gets as long as it needs.
The five big ideas covered:
Quantity is stable
Numbers have order
Sets can be compared
Counting is purposeful
Zero means none

WHO MADE THIS?
I’m Kristy, a specialist educator based in Melbourne, Australia with over 20 years of experience supporting children with learning difficulties, dyscalculia, and neurodiverse profiles in one-to-one sessions. These printables are built on the same evidence-based approaches I use with my own students — not adapted from a generic maths curriculum.
No timed activities. No number facts under pressure. No shame.
📝 A NOTE ON PACE
There’s no timetable here. Short, calm 10-minute sessions beat long stressful ones. Repeat a sheet as many times as your child needs, on as many different days as it takes — repetition, not pressure, is how these ideas become automatic.
